Operation Silver Fox - Operation Reindeer

Operation Reindeer

See also: Operation Renntier

The first phase, Renntier, was launched on 22 June 1941, to coincide with the launch of Operation Barbarossa. The two divisions of Mountain Corps Norwegen, the 2nd and 3rd Mountain Divisions, moved out from Kirkenes and began deploying in the Finnish held area around Petsamo. The operation was successful, the appearance of a German corps on their border coming as a surprise to the Russians. Dietl's troops reformed and prepared for the launch of Platinfuchs. In the south, the units of Feige's XXXVI Corps prepared for their attack. On 25 June 1941, Finland entered the war, leaving the way clear for Silver Fox to commence.

Famous quotes containing the word operation:

An absolute can only be given in an intuition, while all the rest has to do with analysis. We call intuition here the sympathy by which one is transported into the interior of an object in order to coincide with what there is unique and consequently inexpressible in it. Analysis, on the contrary, is the operation which reduces the object to elements already known.
    Henri Bergson (1859–1941)
