Radiohead
On October 10, 2007, English rock band Radiohead released the album In Rainbows, but putting the album on the band's website, Radiohead.com, and allowing listeners to purchase the album for whatever price the consumer wanted to pay. This allowed consumers to download the album for free, while still staying within the bounds of legality. The album was online for three months before being taken down by the band and physically released in the CD format. Even though the majority of people downloaded the album for free, while online, In Rainbows outsold Radiohead's previous album, Hail to the Thief, in terms of the total amount of money generated by sales for the band.
