Interestingly in the series, the Characters in Onegai My Melody were both composed of both characters from the original character series as well as characters exclusively made for the series. The Dezinens of Mary Land were somewhat considered as Living Dolls, as referenced to Maki's Phobia on cute stuff. Some of the characters in the series became official in the Sanrio Canon. For instance, Kuromi, who appeared in the first series became an official character to the Sanrio franchise in 2005.

Several cameo characters from other Sanrio Franchises also appears in the anime as well. Hello Kitty appears in the eyecatches of the first and second series while Berry and Cherry appeared as narrators for the fourth series.

Famous quotes containing the word characters:

We are like travellers using the cinders of a volcano to roast their eggs. Whilst we see that it always stands ready to clothe what we would say, we cannot avoid the question whether the characters are not significant of themselves.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The business of a novelist is, in my opinion, to create characters first and foremost, and then to set them in the snarl of the human currents of his time, so that there results an accurate permanent record of a phase of human history.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

Of the other characters in the book there is, likewise, little to say. The most endearing one is obviously the old Captain Maksim Maksimich, stolid, gruff, naively poetical, matter-of- fact, simple-hearted, and completely neurotic.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
