Old Quantum Theory - Limitations of The Old Quantum Theory

Limitations of The Old Quantum Theory

The old quantum theory had some limitations:

  • The old quantum theory provides no means to calculate the intensities of the spectral lines;
  • It fails when applied to atoms with more than one electron. That is, it cannot be applied to many-body systems;
  • It fails to explain the anomalous Zeeman effect (that is, where the spin of the electron cannot be neglected).

It was later understood that the old quantum theory is in fact the semi-classical approximation (also called quasi-classical) to the Schrödinger equation which has limited applicability.

Famous quotes containing the words quantum theory, limitations of, limitations, quantum and/or theory:

    But how is one to make a scientist understand that there is something unalterably deranged about differential calculus, quantum theory, or the obscene and so inanely liturgical ordeals of the precession of the equinoxes.
    Antonin Artaud (1896–1948)

    The motion picture made in Hollywood, if it is to create art at all, must do so within such strangling limitations of subject and treatment that it is a blind wonder it ever achieves any distinction beyond the purely mechanical slickness of a glass and chromium bathroom.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

    No man could bring himself to reveal his true character, and, above all, his true limitations as a citizen and a Christian, his true meannesses, his true imbecilities, to his friends, or even to his wife. Honest autobiography is therefore a contradiction in terms: the moment a man considers himself, even in petto, he tries to gild and fresco himself.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

    But how is one to make a scientist understand that there is something unalterably deranged about differential calculus, quantum theory, or the obscene and so inanely liturgical ordeals of the precession of the equinoxes.
    Antonin Artaud (1896–1948)

    No theory is good unless it permits, not rest, but the greatest work. No theory is good except on condition that one use it to go on beyond.
    André Gide (1869–1951)
