Old Man of Hoy - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

The Old Man appears in the "Trailer sketch" of the Monty Python's Flying Circus episode "Archaeology Today" in which the voiceover (Eric Idle) says that in the upcoming BBC Television season, singer Lulu "will be tackling The Old Man of Hoy". It also appears in the opening scene of the video of the Eurythmics' 1984 hit song "Here Comes the Rain Again".

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

    And all the popular statesmen say
    That purity built up the State
    And after kept it from decay;
    Admonish us to cling to that
    And let all base ambition be,
    For intellect would make us proud....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    The anorexic prefigures this culture in rather a poetic fashion by trying to keep it at bay. He refuses lack. He says: I lack nothing, therefore I shall not eat. With the overweight person, it is the opposite: he refuses fullness, repletion. He says, I lack everything, so I will eat anything at all. The anorexic staves off lack by emptiness, the overweight person staves off fullness by excess. Both are homeopathic final solutions, solutions by extermination.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
