Rock Art At Nourlangie

There are a number of shelters in amongst this large outcrop linked by a 1.5km circular walk. The shelters contain several impressive paintings that deal with Aboriginal mythology. The full details of the stories connected to these artworks are known only to certain Aboriginal people but interpretive signage is present at the art sites to assist visitors in understanding these rock art treasures.

Famous quotes containing the words rock and/or art:

    The acorn’s not yet
    Fallen from the tree
    That’s to grow the wood,
    That’s to make the cradle,
    That’s to rock the bairn,
    That’s to grow a man,
    That’s to lay me.
—Unknown. The Cauld Lad of Hilton or, The Wandering Spectre (l. 2–8)

I think sometimes that it is almost a pity to enjoy Italy as much as I do, because the acuteness of my sensations makes them rather exhausting; but when I see the stupid Italians I have met here, completely insensitive to their surroundings, and ignorant of the treasures of art and history among which they have grown up, I begin to think it is better to be an American, and bring to it all a mind and eye unblunted by custom.
    Edith Wharton (1862–1937)
