Nosson Tzvi Finkel (Slabodka) - Land of Israel

Land of Israel

Finkel staged one of the most dramatic moves in the history of yeshivos. In the 1920s he decided to create a branch of his yeshiva in the Land of Israel, together with the dean Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, setting it up in Hebron and sending waves of hand-picked students there, culminating with his own permanent aliyah, "going up", to the Holy Land two years before his passing.

In the region of Palestine he founded his own institution in the town of Hebron called Knesses Yisroel - "Gathering of Israel", which moved to Jerusalem following the massacre of Jews during the 1929 Palestine riots in which many of the yeshiva students perished.

Famous quotes containing the words land of, land and/or israel:

    The land of faery
Where nobody gets old and godly and grave,
Where nobody gets old and crafty and wise,
Where nobody gets old and bitter of tongue.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

The seashore is a sort of neutral ground, a most advantageous point from which to contemplate this world. It is even a trivial place. The waves forever rolling to the land are too far-traveled and untamable to be familiar. Creeping along the endless beach amid the sun-squall and the foam, it occurs to us that we, too, are the product of sea-slime.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.
    Bible: Hebrew, 1 Samuel 8:5.

Leaders of ancient Israel asking the last of the judges, Samuel, to appoint a king.
