Northern Rhodesia - Law

Law

In 1889, the British South African Company was given the power to establish a police force and administer justice within Northern Rhodesia. In the case of African natives appearing before courts, the Company was instructed to have regard to the customs and laws of their tribe or nation. An Order in Council of 1900 created the High Court of North-Eastern Rhodesia which took control of civil and criminal justice; it was not until 1906 that North-Western Rhodesia received the same. In 1911 the two were amalgamated into the High Court of Northern Rhodesia.

Famous quotes containing the word law:

They are free, but not entirely free. For Law is despot over them, and they fear him much more than your men fear you.
    Herodotus (c. 484–424 B.C.)

And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today? But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children...
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 4:8,9.

Faith, I have been a truant in the law,
And never yet could frame my will to it,
And therefore frame the law unto my will.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
