Proposals
The N&ER was part of an 1833 scheme for a railway in Great Britain from Islington to York via Cambridge, Peterborough and Lincoln. The original "Grand Northern Railway" project, proposed by Nicholas Cundy, floundered until being adopted by the Lincolnshire landowner Henry Handley. Handley formed the Northern and Eastern railway company and, in 1835, had the route re-surveyed by engineer James Walker.

Famous quotes containing the word proposals:
“One theme links together these new proposals for family policythe idea that the family is exceedingly durable. Changes in structure and function and individual roles are not to be confused with the collapse of the family. Families remain more important in the lives of children than other institutions. Family ties are stronger and more vital than many of us imagine in the perennial atmosphere of crisis surrounding the subject.”
—Joseph Featherstone (20th century)
