Norman Wisdom - Tributes and Other References

Tributes and Other References

  • In 1981, Norman Wisdom was listed (along with the members of the punk band the Ramones) in The Human League's song "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of," off their album DARE. Wisdom is cited in the song as an example of one of life's great pleasures, one of the best things worth experiencing in life: the "things that dreams are made of." Ironically Wisdom outlived the three members of the Ramones also name checked in the song - Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee who all died between 2001 and 2004.
  • In 2007, a Norman Wisdom-themed bar opened at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas, called Sir Norman's. It has stills from his many films on the walls and TV screens playing some of his old films. The bronze statue of Wisdom, which used to be on a bench outside Douglas Town Hall, has been moved to the steps leading into the bar.
  • The 2011 film My Week with Marilyn features an actor (Glenn Michael Ford) playing Norman Wisdom in a background scene.
  • In September 1991 a French speaker in an agriculture committee in the European Communities called for the communities to show "la sagesse des Normands" (the wisdom of the Normans), which was translated into English as calling for Norman Wisdom to sort out Europe's problems.
