Non-linear Editing System - Accessing The Material

Accessing The Material

The non-linear editing system has to access the video media to be able to edit them. Because these media are located on the video server that ingested the video feeds and because this video server has recorded the feeds in one given codec, several methods exist for the editing system to access the material :

  • Direct access : the video server has recorded the feeds with a codec that is readable by the editing system, has an Ethernet connection and allows direct editing. The editor will preview the material directly on the server (which is seen as a distant disk) and will edit directly the material on the server without any transcoding or transfer. This method is very new.
  • By a shared storage : the video server transfers the feeds on a shared storage which is accessible by all editors. If the media were in the appropriate codec on the server, they only need to be transferred, but if they were recorded using a different codec, they also have to be transcoded during the transfer (by appropriate software). In some cases (depending on material), the files on the shared storage can be edited even before the transfer is finished.
  • By importing: the editor downloads the material on its own machine and makes the edit locally. This method can be used with previous methods.

Famous quotes containing the word material:

Decisive inventions and discoveries always are initiated by an intellectual or moral stimulus as their actual motivating force, but, usually, the final impetus to human action is given by material impulses ... merchants stood as a driving force behind the heroes of the age of discovery; this first heroic impulse to conquer the world emanated from very mortal forces—in the beginning, there was spice.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)
