Nimruz (Balochi/Persian: ولایت نیمروز; Pashto: نيمروز ولايت) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan, located in near Iran and Pakistan. The province contains five districts, 649 villages, 170,000 settled and nomadic people. Zaranj serves as the provincial capital.

The name Nimruz means "mid-day" or "half-day" in Persian. The name is chosen because the meridian cutting the old world in half passes through this region. Nimruz covers 41,000 km². It is the most sparsely populated province in the country, located in the Sistan Basin. A substantial part of the province is the desert area of Dashti Margo.

Famous quotes containing the word province:

Female Virtues are of a Domestick turn. The Family is the proper Province for Private Women to Shine in. If they must be showing their Zeal for the Publick, let it not be against those who are perhaps of the same Family, or at least of the same Religion or Nation, but against those who are the open, professed, undoubted Enemies of their Faith, Liberty, and Country.
    Joseph Addison (1672–1719)
