New Taipei City - Name

Name

New Taipei city had been administered as Taipei County (Chinese: 臺北縣 or 台北縣 Táiběixiàn), Taiwan Province until its reorganization as a special municipality on December 25, 2010.

Initially the official English version of the city's name was assigned to be Xinbei City by the county authority, which is the pinyin transliteration of the Chinese city name. The new mayor Eric Chu requested the name New Taipei City as the official English rendering instead. New Taipei is named from "新臺北", where New is the literal translation of "新" and Taipei is the transcription of "臺北". Considering the mayor's request and the public opinion, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) approved the name New Taipei City on December 31, 2010.
