Future
The National League System is expected to continue to operate in a broadly similar manner to how it does currently with the only public plans being the intent to reduce the number of Step 5 leagues to twelve. The 2006 abolition of the Isthmian League Division Two had this in mind and, in 2006, it asked the Essex Senior League and the Kent League to consider merging (at that time the only two remaining regions with one level rather than two at this level). However, no merger occurred and the Kent Invicta League has since been formed to leave Essex as the only place in the country where one league effectively straddles two levels of the NLS. In 2012, the FA is holding meetings with clubs to consult them on the future restructuring. The FA hopes to reduce the number of Step 5 leagues to twelve by the 2013–14 season, with the number of clubs in each league being gradually reduced to 22 through adjustments to the number of relegation places.
A further possible future change is the increase of the NLS's remit to an eighth step.

Famous quotes containing the word future:
“How difficult the task to quench the fire and the pride of private ambition, and to sacrifice ourselves and all our hopes and expectations to the public weal! How few have souls capable of so noble an undertaking! How often are the laurels worn by those who have had no share in earning them! But there is a future recompense of reward, to which the upright man looks, and which he will most assuredly obtain, provided he perseveres unto the end.”
—Abigail Adams (17441818)
“The future is just as much a condition of the present as is the past. What shall be and must be is the ground of that which is.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“I am not naturally ... A bag of wind; yet ... I mean deliberately and decidedly to cut in future all my old ideas on this head. I dont think modesty pays. It is a good quality in a family, it is a domestic virtue, it makes a home happy after you have got a home, but it is not potent in getting homes. It is not a money-maker, neither is it lucky in gaining a reputation. I am of the impression that gaseous bodies do better.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
