Name Server - Domain Name System

Domain Name System

The Internet maintains two principal namespaces: the domain name hierarchy and the Internet Protocol (IP) address system. The Domain Name System maintains the domain namespace and provides translation services between these two namespaces. Internet name servers implement the Domain Name System. A DNS name server is a server that stores the DNS records, such as address (A, AAAA) records, name server (NS) records, and mail exchanger (MX) records for a domain name (see also List of DNS record types) and responds with answers to queries against its database.

The top hierarchy of the Internet Domain Name System is served by the root name servers maintained by delegation by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Sometimes, Internet browsing speed can be improved by replacing ISP's default Domain Name Server with free public Domain Name Server.

Famous quotes containing the words domain and/or system:

You are the harvest and not the reaper
And of your domain another is the keeper.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

While the system of holding people in hostage is as old as the oldest war, a fresher note is introduced when a tyrannic state is at war with its own subjects and may hold any citizen in hostage with no law to restrain it.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
