Nadia Almada - Personal Life

Personal Life

Almada was born on the Portuguese island of Madeira, under the name of Jorge Leodoro, but was known as Carlos. Almada moved to England in 1996 and worked in a department store in Woking. She has also managed a children's bookstore. Before appearing on Big Brother, she worked as a cashier in Barclays bank. Her father, Luis, did not know his child was transsexual until The Sun newspaper tracked him down and revealed the story. The Sun also dubbed Almada the Portugeezer, the "Portuguese Man O' War" and Nads, 'nads' being a slang term for gonads (testicles). Her mother had not seen her for a year, since before Almada's transition, but was there to welcome her back into the outside world after the show concluded.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

The historian must have ... some conception of how men who are not historians behave. Otherwise he will move in a world of the dead. He can only gain that conception through personal experience, and he can only use his personal experiences when he is a genius.
    —E.M. (Edward Morgan)

The earth is not a mere fragment of dead history, stratum upon stratum like the leaves of a book, to be studied by geologists and antiquaries chiefly, but living poetry like the leaves of a tree, which precede flowers and fruit,—not a fossil earth, but a living earth; compared with whose great central life all animal and vegetable life is merely parasitic.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
