2001: Janet Jackson
Pop artist Janet Jackson was selected as the first MTV Icon in 2001, in an event held in Los Angeles. Performers at the ceremony included Outkast, Destiny's Child, Macy Gray, 'N Sync, Pink, Usher, Mýa, and Buckcherry. Outkast performed their own song, "Ms. Jackson", while the other artists performed cover versions of several of Jackson's hits. Celebrity presenters included Jessica Simpson, Aaliyah, and Stevie Wonder, while members of the Jackson family including Janet's brother Jermaine were also in attendance. Jackson herself concluded the event with a performance of her then-current hit single "All for You".
