Mountain

Mountain

A mountain is a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth by over 10,000 feet (3,000 m). Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in huge mountain ranges.

Famous quotes containing the word mountain:

‘Tis distance lends enchantment to the view,
And robes the mountain in its azure hue.
    Thomas Campbell (1777–1844)

Come live with me and be my Love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That hills and valleys, dales and fields,
Or woods or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon the rocks,
And see the shepherds feed their flocks
By shallow rivers, to whose falls
    Melodious birds sing madrigals.
    Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593)

One who only sits idle and eats can exhaust a mountain of wealth.
    Chinese proverb.
