Moriscos (, Portuguese: mouriscos ), meaning "Moorish") were Muslims who decided to convert to Christianity rather than leave Spain and Portugal. Over time the term was used in a pejorative sense applied to those nominal Catholics who were suspected of secretly practicing Islam.
