Molten Sea - Mathematical Problem

Mathematical Problem

The biblical description that the bowl has a diameter of 10 cubits and a circumference of 30 cubits suggest that the Bible defines pi as equal to 3, rather than the correct value of approximately 3.14159. Rabbi Nehemiah argues that the Bible is not claiming that pi equals 3. Instead, Nehemiah argues that the diameter was measure to the outside, while the circumference was measure along the inside. After accounting for the width of the brim, this results in the correct value of pi.

Famous quotes containing the words mathematical and/or problem:

What is history? Its beginning is that of the centuries of systematic work devoted to the solution of the enigma of death, so that death itself may eventually be overcome. That is why people write symphonies, and why they discover mathematical infinity and electromagnetic waves.
    Boris Pasternak (1890–1960)

What had really caused the women’s movement was the additional years of human life. At the turn of the century women’s life expectancy was forty-six; now it was nearly eighty. Our groping sense that we couldn’t live all those years in terms of motherhood alone was “the problem that had no name.” Realizing that it was not some freakish personal fault but our common problem as women had enabled us to take the first steps to change our lives.
    Betty Friedan (20th century)
