Miss Teenage America

Miss Teenage America

The Miss Teenage America Pageant was started in 1961 as a pageant for High School girls. Sponsored by Dr. Pepper, the pageant was held in Dallas, Texas for most of its run. Unlike today's Miss Teen USA and Miss America's Outstanding Teen, this pageant featured girls representing cities and not states.

The pageant was usually televised on the Saturday after Thanksgiving on CBS. The last televised pageant was on November 26, 1977 with Richard Thomas of The Waltons as host. Dr Pepper sold the pageant to Teen Magazine in 1981.

The national finals were also televised on February 15, 1979 from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. Anson Williams, who played the character 'Potsy' on Happy Days was the host.

Famous quotes containing the words teenage and/or america:

Today so much rebellion is aimless and demoralizing precisely because children have no values to challenge. Teenage rebellion is a testing process in which young people try out various values in order to make them their own. But during those years of trial, error, embarrassment, a child needs family standards to fall back on, reliable habits of thought and feeling that provide security and protection.
    Neil Kurshan (20th century)

In America every woman has her set of girl-friends; some are cousins, the rest are gained at school. These form a permanent committee who sit on each other’s affairs, who “come out” together, marry and divorce together, and who end as those groups of bustling, heartless well-informed club-women who govern society. Against them the Couple of Ehepaar is helpless and Man in their eyes but a biological interlude.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)
