Military Revolutionary Committee

The Military Revolutionary Committee also known as the Milrevcom (Russian: Военно-революционный комитет, военревком, ВРК) was the name for military organs under the soviets during the period of the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War. The most notable ones were those of the Petrograd Soviet, the Moscow Soviet, and at Stavka.

These committees were in charge of preparation and carrying out the revolution. After the revolution they were in charge of the control of the military, however during the Civil War they carried out governmental functions in some turbulent areas of Russia.

The Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee was created on 29 October 1917.

This is the same organisation translated as the Revolutionary Military Committee in Lenin's collected works.

Famous quotes containing the words military and/or committee:

The military mind is indeed a menace. Old-fashioned futurity that sees only men fighting and dying in smoke and fire; hears nothing more civilized than a cannonade; scents nothing but the stink of battle-wounds and blood.
    Sean O’Casey (1884–1964)

It is easy to carp at colleges, and the college, if he will wait for it, will have its own turn. Genius exists there also, but will not answer a call of a committee of the House of Commons. It is rare, precious, eccentric, and darkling.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
