Midnight Sun - White Nights

White Nights

Locations above 60 degrees latitude that are south of the Arctic Circle or north of the Antarctic Circle experience midnight twilight instead. The sun is less than 6 degrees below the horizon, so that daytime activities, such as reading, are still possible without artificial light on a clear night.

White Nights have become a common symbol of Saint Petersburg, Russia, where they occur from about 11 June to 2 July, and the last 10 days of June are celebrated with cultural events.

Famous quotes containing the words white and/or nights:

Whether he cringe at my feet,
whether he beat on your eyes,
    white wings, white butterflies.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    The clock runs down
    timeless and still.
The days and nights turn hours to years
and water in a gutter marks the circle of another world
    hating, resentful, and afraid
stagnant, and green, and full of slimy things.
    Margaret Abigail Walker (b. 1915)
