Middlesex Hospital - Paintings of Frederick Cayley Robinson

Paintings of Frederick Cayley Robinson

For nearly 100 years, four giant paintings welcomed visitors to the reception area of The Middlesex Hospital. 'Acts of Mercy' were painted in 1912 by Frederick Cayley Robinson, a distinctive yet elusive British artist, after being commissioned by Sir Edmund Davis, one of the governors of the hospital. Prior to the demolition of the hospital, the art was purchased by The Wellcome Library, and in 2010, the canvasses were loaned to The National Gallery for an exhibition.

Famous quotes containing the words paintings, frederick and/or robinson:

Not “Seeing is Believing” you ninny, but “Believing is Seeing.” For modern art has become completely literary: the paintings and other works exist only to illustrate the text.
    Tom Wolfe (b. 1931)

It’s a pity you didn’t know when you started your game of murder, that I was playing, too.
Robb White, and William Castle. Frederick Loren (Vincent Price)

A thousand golden sheaves were lying there,
Shining and still, but not for long to stay—
As if a thousand girls with golden hair
Might rise from where they slept and go away.
    —Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869–1935)
