Middle-earth Role Playing - Setting

Setting

The setting for MERP is an expanded version of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Published campaign sourcebooks are usually set either around the year 1600 of the Third Age, or just after the War of the Ring. Therefore, MERP represents an interpretation of Middle-earth that does not directly involve the players in the continuity of Tolkien's published works. Several of the campaign modules depict lands to the east and south of the lands described by Tolkien, and I.C.E. may be seen as having created an original setting, inspired by and including several elements of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.

Only in the problem play is there any real drama, because drama is no mere setting up of the camera to nature: it is the presentation in parable of the conflict between Man’s will and his environment: in a word, of problem.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

it is finally as though that thing of monstrous interest
    were happening in the sky
