Michael Foot - Health

Health

Foot suffered from asthma until 1963 (which disqualified him from service in World War II) and eczema until middle age.

In October 1963 he was involved in a car crash, suffering pierced lungs, broken ribs, and a broken left leg. Foot subsequently used a walking stick for the rest of his life. According to former MP Tam Dalyell, Foot had up to the accident been a chain-smoker, but gave up the habit thereafter.

In 1976, Foot became blind in one eye following an attack of shingles.

Famous quotes containing the word health:

To get time for civic work, for exercise, for neighborhood projects, reading or meditation, or just plain time to themselves, mothers need to hold out against the fairly recent but surprisingly entrenched myth that “good mothers” are constantly with their children. They will have to speak out at last about the demoralizing effect of spending day after day with small children, no matter how much they love them.
—Wendy Coppedge Sanford. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, introduction (1978)

Any balance we achieve between adult and parental identities, between children’s and our own needs, works only for a time—because, as one father says, “It’s a new ball game just about every week.” So we are always in the process of learning to be parents.
Joan Sheingold Ditzion, Dennie, and Palmer Wolf. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, ch. 2 (1978)

It is always singular, but encouraging, to meet with common sense in very old books, as the Heetopades of Veeshnoo Sarma; a playful wisdom which has eyes behind as well as before, and oversees itself. It asserts their health and independence of the experience of later times. This pledge of sanity cannot be spared in a book, that it sometimes pleasantly reflect upon itself.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
