A Modern Miasma
There is a hypothesis of the existence of miasma today. Some people today believe that public places, classrooms especially, have an air of miasma. Scientists believe that the classroom exposes children to viruses based on droplets of viruses in the air. They also believe that classrooms provide exposure to non-seasonal allergens such as mites, cats, dogs, cockroaches and mice. These allergens are dispersed into the air from clothing and spread among students. These exposures lead to an increased tolerance in children, which tends to fade over extended breaks causing illness when returning to these classrooms.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or miasma:
“Sir Walter Raleigh might well be studied, if only for the excellence of his style, for he is remarkable in the midst of so many masters. There is a natural emphasis in his style, like a mans tread, and a breathing space between the sentences, which the best of modern writing does not furnish. His chapters are like English parks, or say rather like a Western forest, where the larger growth keeps down the underwood, and one may ride on horseback through the openings.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“There is something about the literary life that repels me, all this desperate building of castles on cobwebs, the long-drawn acrimonious struggle to make something important which we all know will be gone forever in a few years, the miasma of failure which is to me almost as offensive as the cheap gaudiness of popular success.”
—Raymond Chandler (18881959)
