Messianic Age - Messianic Age and Eschatology

Messianic Age and Eschatology

In the context of "Messianic Age", the earliest meaning of the word "messianic" is derived from notion of Yemot HaMashiach meaning "the days of the messiah", that is, the Jewish Messiah. Messiah derives from Hebrew, meaning "the anointed one". Originally the "anointed one" referred to Ahron and his descendants, the Kohanim. Following the establishment of the kingdom of Saul, it could also refer to a king who was anointed with holy anointing oil as part of what might be understood to be his coronation ceremony.

Eschatology is an area of religious scholarship that deals with prophecies about "the end of the current age" of human civilization.

Famous quotes containing the words messianic and/or age:

I think the Messianic concept, which is the Jewish offering to mankind, is a great victory. What does it mean? It means that history has a sense, a meaning, a direction; it goes somewhere, and necessarily in a good direction—the Messiah.
    Elie Wiesel (b. 1928)

When I was very young and the urge to be someplace was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch. When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age. In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job. Nothing has worked.... In other words, I don’t improve, in further words, once a bum always a bum. I fear the disease is incurable.
    John Steinbeck (1902–1968)
