High School & College Career

Fernandez was a standout wide receiver for Andrew Hill High School in San Jose, California, where he picked up his famous nickname "Swervin' Mervyn" from the team's quarterback.

Following high school, Fernandez played at DeAnza Junior College in Cupertino, California, before finishing his college career at nearby San José State University. It was at San José State that Oakland Raider's staff members took notice of the 6'3", 205 pound, speedy wide receiver, and the Raiders eventually made Fernandez their 10th round pick in the 1983 NFL Draft.

Famous quotes containing the words high, school, college and/or career:

Optimism is the content of small men in high places.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

The happiest two-job marriages I saw during my research were ones in which men and women shared the housework and parenting. What couples called good communication often meant that they were good at saying thanks to one another for small aspects of taking care of the family. Making it to the school play, helping a child read, cooking dinner in good spirit, remembering the grocery list,... these were silver and gold of the marital exchange.
    Arlie Hochschild (20th century)

I am the only colored student in my class.
    Langston Hughes (1902–1967)

I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.
    William Cobbett (1762–1835)
