Aftermath

The reaction of the American public was favorable. The President's overall approval rating rose 11% points.

A number of US personnel were awarded medals following the events, including:

• TSgt Wayne Fisk, a pararescueman on Knife 51 was awarded a Bronze Oak leaf cluster in lieu of a second award of the Silver Star.

• 1st Lt Bob Blough, pilot of Jolly Green 44 was awarded the Silver Star.

Four Airmen were awarded the Air Force Cross:

• Capt Rowland Purser, pilot of Jolly Green 43
• 1st Lt Donald Backlund, pilot of Jolly Green 11
• 1st Lt Richard C Brims, pilot of Knife 51
• SSgt Jon Harston, flight mechanic of Knife 31
