Mary Magdalene - Speculations

Speculations

The name Mary occurs numerous times in the New Testament. There are several people named Mary in the Gospels. There also are several unnamed women who seem to share characteristics with Mary Magdalene. At different times in history, Mary Magdalene has been confused or misidentified with almost every woman in the four Gospels, except the mother of Jesus. Arising from this misidentification with other women throughout the four Gospels is the "...idea that this Mary was 'the woman who was a sinner,' or that she was unchaste", which has not been definitively decided; the Vatican itself is not yet agreed.

Famous quotes containing the word speculations:

In mind, she was of a strong and vigorous turn, having from her earliest youth devoted herself with uncommon ardour to the study of the law; not wasting her speculations upon its eagle flights, which are rare, but tracing it attentively through all the slippery and eel-like crawlings in which it commonly pursues its way.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)
