Martin Luther King, Jr., was the conscience of his generation.... He and I grew up in the same South, he the son of a clergyman, I the son of a farmer. We both knew from opposite sides, the invisible wall of racial segregation.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

Ijustwantto, like, dance. I just want to like, you know, put on some Shirelles. I just, I want to be black.
Paul D. Zimmerman, U.S. screenwriter, and Martin Scorsese. Masha (Sandra Bernhard)

If he have faith, the believer cannot be restrained. He betrays himself. He breaks out. He confesses and teaches this gospel to the people at the risk of life itself.
    —Martin Luther (1483–1546)

Thirty-five years ago, when I was a college student, people wrote letters. The businessman who read, the lawyer who traveled; the dressmaker in evening school, my unhappy mother, our expectant neighbor: all conducted an often large and varied correspondence. It was the accustomed way of ordinarily educated people to occupy the world beyond their own small and immediate lives.
    Vivian Gornick (b. 1935)
