His uncle Charlie Roberts captained Manchester United and England while his sisters Sarah and Betty were members of the Darlington Quaker Ladies team. His father worked in the local rolling mill. Hooper was brought up in the Rise Carr area of Darlington, he was initially a goalkeeper but switched to an outfield position after being told he was too small to be an effective keeper.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

They would probably help, in some trying time to come, to keep the jewel of liberty within the family of freedom.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

Anytime we react to behavior in our children that we dislike in ourselves, we need to proceed with extreme caution. The dynamics of everyday family life also have a way of repeating themselves.
    Cathy Rindner Tempelsman (20th century)

What we often take to be family values—the work ethic, honesty, clean living, marital fidelity, and individual responsibility—are in fact social, religious, or cultural values. To be sure, these values are transmitted by parents to their children and are familial in that sense. They do not, however, originate within the family. It is the value of close relationships with other family members, and the importance of these bonds relative to other needs.
    David Elkind (20th century)
