Mare Imbrium - Observation and Exploration

Observation and Exploration

Mare Imbrium is visible to the naked eye from Earth. In the traditional 'Man in the Moon' image seen on the Moon in Western folklore, Mare Imbrium forms the man's right eye.

Apollo 15 landed in the southeastern region of Mare Imbrium, near the Apennine Mountains. In the previous year, on the 17th of November 1970 at 03:47 Universal Time the Soviet spacecraft Luna 17 made a soft landing in the mare, at latitude 38.28 N, and longitude 35.00 W. It was carrying the Lunokhod 1 remote-controlled rover, which was successfully deployed and undertook a mission lasting several months.

Famous quotes containing the words observation and/or exploration:

I should say that the most prominent scientific men of our country, and perhaps of this age, are either serving the arts and not pure science, or are performing faithful but quite subordinate labors in particular departments. They make no steady and systematic approaches to the central fact.... There is wanting constant and accurate observation with enough of theory to direct and discipline it. But, above all, there is wanting genius.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

For women who do not love us, as for the “disappeared”, knowing that we no longer have any hope does not prevent us form continuing to wait. We live on our guard, on watch; women whose son has gone asea on a dangerous exploration imagine at any minute, although it has long been certain that he has perished, that he will enter, miraculously saved, and healthy.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)
