A managing editor is a senior member of a publication's management team.
In the United States, a managing editor oversees and coordinates the publication's editorial activities. The position is generally the second highest in rank (after the editor-in-chief, also called "executive editor").
In the United Kingdom a managing editor tends to manage budget, staffing, and scheduling for a publication, and may have equivalent ranking to a deputy editor in the organization's structure.
The title also applies to the evening televised newscasts, such as those on ABC, CNN, CBS, NBC and the FOX News Channel. The anchors of these newscasts also work as the managing editor of their newscasts. Responsibilities vary in different companies.

Famous quotes containing the words managing and/or editor:
“There is not much less vexation in the government of a private family than in the managing of an entire state.”
—Michel de Montaigne (15331592)
“If the veil were withdrawn from the sanctuary of domestic life, and man could look upon the fear, the loathing, the detestations which his tyranny and reckless gratification of self has caused to take the place of confiding love, which placed a woman in his power, he would shudder at the hideous wrong of the present regulations of the domestic abode.”
—Lydia Jane Pierson, U.S. womens rights activist and corresponding editor of The Womans Advocate. The Womans Advocate, represented in The Lily, pp. 117-8 (1855-1858 or 1860)
