The film received mixed reviews from critics, aggregating a 63% "fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on 118 reviews. Although Entertainment Weekly rated it as "the best movie of the year". It was a financial loss for Universal, earning about $47.5 million worldwide with a cost of $82 million. Man on the Moon ended a string of Jim Carrey films that had very successful opening nights. and although the film received mixed reviews from critics, they were near unanimous in their praise for Jim Carrey's dead-on portrayal of Andy Kaufman. However, it did win a Golden Globe for Carrey's performance, as well as a nomination for Best Musical or Comedy, along with several other acting nominations for Carrey.
