The Mali Federation (Fédération du Mali) was a country in West Africa. It was formed by a union between Senegal and the Sudanese Republic (formerly French Sudan). It was founded on April 4, 1959, within the French Community and became entirely self-governing when it gained independence from France on June 20, 1960.
The federation collapsed shortly after independence, on 20 August 1960, when Senegal withdrew, due to political disagreements. The Sudanese Republic was renamed the Republic of Mali on 22 September 1960.
The Federation's president was Modibo Keïta, and its government was based in Dakar.

Famous quotes containing the word federation:
“Women realize that we are living in an ungoverned world. At heart we are all pacifists. We should love to talk it over with the war-makers, but they would not understand. Words are so inadequate, and we realize that the hatred must kill itself; so we give our men gladly, unselfishly, proudly, patriotically, since the world chooses to settle its disputes in the old barbarous way.”
