LOVE Park - The Christmas Village in Philadelphia

The Christmas Village in Philadelphia

Since construction on City Hall, The Christmas Village in Philadelphia has been relocated to the Robert Indiana-named park. The Christmas Village is modeled after 16th-century German Christmas Markets, the most famous one being in Nuremberg. Running from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day, the village attracts thousands in Center City and is one of the most popular holiday events in Philadelphia. In 2010, the event was criticized for its name and many called for it to be marketed as a holiday village. Shortly after, Mayor Michael Nutter intervened and the name was restored.

Famous quotes containing the words christmas, village and/or philadelphia:

    Monday’s child is fair in face,
    Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
    Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
    Thursday’s child has far to go,
    Friday’s child is loving and giving,
    Saturday’s child works hard for its living;
    And a child that is born on a Christmas day,
    Is fair and wise, good and gay.
    Anonymous. Quoted in Traditions, Legends, Superstitions, and Sketches of Devonshire, vol. 2, ed. Anna E.K.S. Bray (1838)

    The village appeared to me a great news room.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    All the oxygen of the world was in them.
    All the feet of the babies of the world were in them.
    All the crotches of the angels of the world were in them.
    All the morning kisses of Philadelphia were in them.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
