Death

Louis died on 1 January 1515, and was interred in Saint Denis Basilica. Due to the tradition of Salic Law, which did not allow women to inherit the throne of France, he was succeeded by his first cousin's son, Francis I (who was also his son-in-law), who founded his own line of French kings.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    Time turns the old days to derision,
    Our loves into corpses or wives;
    And marriage and death and division
    Make barren our lives.
    —A.C. (Algernon Charles)

    After my death I wish no other herald,
    No other speaker of my living actions
    To keep mine honor from corruption,
    But such an honest chronicler as Griffith.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
