Long Mode

In the x86-64 computer architecture, long mode is the mode where a 64-bit application (or operating system) can access 64-bit instructions and registers. 32-bit programs and 16-bit protected mode programs are executed in a compatibility sub-mode; real mode or virtual 8086 mode programs cannot run in this mode.

Famous quotes containing the words long and/or mode:

He that fails in his endeavours after wealth or power will not long retain either honesty or courage.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

I have no scheme about it,—no designs on men at all; and, if I had, my mode would be to tempt them with the fruit, and not with the manure. To what end do I lead a simple life at all, pray? That I may teach others to simplify their lives?—and so all our lives be simplified merely, like an algebraic formula? Or not, rather, that I may make use of the ground I have cleared, to live more worthily and profitably?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
