London Philharmonic Orchestra - Suspension of Musicians

Suspension of Musicians

Four string players were suspended by the orchestra in 2011 for signing a letter to The Independent newspaper calling on The Proms to cancel a concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, on the grounds of the latter's involvement with the Israeli state and its partnership with the Israeli Defense Forces, who impede the development of Palestinian culture, including the prevention of Palestinian musicians from travelling abroad to perform. The suspensions was criticized as 'disproportionate' by Geoffrey Alderman and 'too harsh' by Norman Lebrecht. LPO chief executive Timothy Walker said 'Jewish pressure' led to the suspensions. One of the suspended players later took a claim for discrimination on the grounds of belief to an employment tribunal.

Famous quotes containing the words suspension of, suspension and/or musicians:

There are two kinds of liberalism. A liberalism which is always, subterraneously authoritative and paternalistic, on the side of one’s good conscience. And then there is a liberalism which is more ethical than political; one would have to find another name for this. Something like a profound suspension of judgment.
    Roland Barthes (1915–1980)

Leonid Ivanovich Shigaev is dead.... The suspension dots, customary in Russian obituaries, must represent the footprints of words that have departed on tiptoe, in reverent single file, leaving their tracks on the marble....
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

We stand in the tumult of a festival.
What festival? This loud, disordered mooch?
    These hospitaliers? These brute-like guests?
These musicians dubbing at a tragedy,
A-dub, a-dub, which is made up of this:
That there are no lines to speak? There is no play.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
