Local Variables in Ruby
Ruby as a language was inspired also by Perl, but in this case, the notation was made simpler: a global variable name must be preceded by a $ sign, like $variable_name
, while a local variable has simply no $ sign in front of its name, like variable_name
(while in perl all scalar values have a $ in front).

Famous quotes containing the words local, variables and/or ruby:
“To see ourselves as others see us can be eye-opening. To see others as sharing a nature with ourselves is the merest decency. But it is from the far more difficult achievement of seeing ourselves amongst others, as a local example of the forms human life has locally taken, a case among cases, a world among worlds, that the largeness of mind, without which objectivity is self- congratulation and tolerance a sham, comes.”
—Clifford Geertz (b. 1926)
“Science is feasible when the variables are few and can be enumerated; when their combinations are distinct and clear. We are tending toward the condition of science and aspiring to do it. The artist works out his own formulas; the interest of science lies in the art of making science.”
—Paul Valéry (18711945)
“A man in the house is worth two in the street.”
—Mae West, U.S. actor, screenwriter, and Leo McCarey. Ruby Carter (Mae West)
