Other High Offices Held
Seventeen of Arkansas's governors have served other high offices, including one President of the United States, an Attorney General, and an ambassador. Thirteen represented Arkansas in the U.S. Congress, and another was refused his seat by the U.S. Senate shortly after the American Civil War, because Arkansas had not yet been reconstructed. Two governors were elected from other states, and one represented Arkansas in the Confederate Congress. Five governors (marked with *) resigned to take other offices, four going to the Senate and one becoming President of the United States, and two (marked with ) resigned their seat in the House to be governor.
All representatives and senators listed represented Arkansas except where noted.

Famous quotes containing the words high, offices and/or held:
“If there be no nobility of descent in a nation, all the more indispensable is it that there should be nobility of ascenta character in them that bear rule, so fine and high and pure, that as men come within the circle of its influence, they involuntarily pay homage to that which is the one pre-eminent distinction, the Royalty of Virtue.”
—Henry Codman Potter (18351908)
“Of course we women gossip on occasion. But our appetite for it is not as avid as a mans. It is in the boys gyms, the college fraternity houses, the club locker rooms, the paneled offices of business that gossip reaches its luxuriant flower.”
—Phyllis McGinley (19051978)
“Does art reflect life? In movies, yes. Because more than any other art form, films have been a mirror held up to societys porous face.”
—Marjorie Rosen (b. 1942)
