List Of Cities In The Netherlands By Province
This is a list of large cities and towns in the Netherlands, sorted by province.
There are no words in the Netherlands which exactly correspond to the English concept of a 'town'. Either one lives in a 'gehucht' (hamlet, settlement, smaller than a village), a 'dorp' (village), or a 'stad' (city). While there is no official 'city status' in Dutch law (see City rights in the Netherlands), the general consensus is that a city constitutes a population of more than 30,000-50,000 inhabitants.. Smaller places are sometimes also considered cities, especially if they historically had city rights or if they function as an urban center in a rural area. Cities with between 100,000 and 250,000 inhabitants are mostly called 'middelgrote steden' (medium-sized cities), while the use of 'grote steden' (big cities) is usually reserved for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven and Almere.

If with too credent ear you list his songs,

“Greece is a sort of American vassal; the Netherlands is the country of American bases that grow like tulip bulbs; Cuba is the main sugar plantation of the American monopolies; Turkey is prepared to kow-tow before any United States pro-consul and Canada is the boring second fiddle in the American symphony.”

“Female Virtues are of a Domestick turn. The Family is the proper Province for Private Women to Shine in. If they must be showing their Zeal for the Publick, let it not be against those who are perhaps of the same Family, or at least of the same Religion or Nation, but against those who are the open, professed, undoubted Enemies of their Faith, Liberty, and Country.”
—Joseph Addison (16721719)
