The Lingfield Derby Trial is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run at Lingfield Park over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 106 yards (2,310 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May.
The event was established in 1932, and it serves as a trial for the Epsom Derby. The left-handed track at Lingfield Park is similar to that at Epsom, as it has an undulating, cambered terrain with a sharp downhill turn into the home straight.
Eight winners of the Lingfield Derby Trial have subsequently won the Derby. The first was April the Fifth in 1932, and the most recent was High-Rise in 1998.

Famous quotes containing the word trial:
“Every political system is an accumulation of habits, customs, prejudices, and principles that have survived a long process of trial and error and of ceaseless response to changing circumstances. If the system works well on the whole, it is a lucky accidentthe luckiest, indeed, that can befall a society.”
—Edward C. Banfield (b. 1916)
