Legion of Honour - Award Conditions

Award Conditions

  • Chevalier: minimum 20 years of public service or 25 years of professional activity, and "eminent merits" (for active duty commissioned officers, this is achieved after 20 years of meritorious service, having been awarded the rank of Chevalier of the Ordre National du Mérite, and the Médaille de la Défense nationale in gold)
  • Officier: minimum 8 years in the rank of Chevalier
  • Commandeur: minimum 5 years in the rank of Officier
  • Grand Officier: minimum 3 years in the rank of Commandeur
  • Grand Croix: minimum 3 years in the rank of Grand Officier

The "eminent merits" required to be awarded the order require the flawless performance of one's trade as well as doing more than ordinarily expected, such as being creative and contributing to the growth of others.

Famous quotes containing the words award and/or conditions:

The award of a pure gold medal for poetry would flatter the recipient unduly: no poem ever attains such carat purity.
    Robert Graves (1895–1985)

Statecraft is soulcraft. Just as all education is moral education because learning conditions conduct, much legislation is moral legislation because it conditions the action and the thought of the nation in broad and important spheres of life.
    George F. Will (b. 1941)
