Legal Sea Foods - History

History

The precursor of Legal Sea Foods was founded in 1904 by Harry Berkowitz, who opened a grocery store called "Legal Cash Market" in the Inman Square area of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The name "Legal Cash Market" came from redemption stamps, like green stamps, which were called Legal Cash trading stamps, and had been given out with groceries bought by customers.

In 1950, his son George opened a fish market called "Legal Sea Foods" next to his father's store.

In 1968, George decided to expand the market into a restaurant called Legal Sea Foods. With the help of his two sons, Marc and Roger, they opened up two other restaurants, one in Chestnut Hill and the other in the Park Plaza in the theater district of downtown Boston.

The company continued to expand both in Boston and out of state and in 1992, Roger Berkowitz became president and CEO of Legal Sea Foods. There are 32 restaurant locations as well as an online seafood market.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this.... It is not “history” which uses men as a means of achieving—as if it were an individual person—its own ends. History is nothing but the activity of men in pursuit of their ends.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

Boys forget what their country means by just reading “the land of the free” in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Liberty’s too precious a thing to be buried in books.
    Sidney Buchman (1902–1975)

I believe that history has shape, order, and meaning; that exceptional men, as much as economic forces, produce change; and that passé abstractions like beauty, nobility, and greatness have a shifting but continuing validity.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
