Animals
Many other animals, including mammals, also have four-chambered hearts, and have a left atrium. The function in these animals is similar. Some animals (amphibians, reptiles) have a three-chambered heart, in which the blood from each atrium is mixed in the single ventricle before being pumped to the aorta. In these animals, the left atrium still serves the purpose of collecting blood from pulmonary veins.

Famous quotes containing the word animals:
“Researchers, with science as their authority, will be able to cut [animals] up, alive, into small pieces, drop them from a great height to see if they are shattered by the fall, or deprive them of sleep for sixteen days and nights continuously for the purposes of an iniquitous monograph.... Animal trust, undeserved faith, when at last will you turn away from us? Shall we never tire of deceiving, betraying, tormenting animals before they cease to trust us?”
—Colette [Sidonie Gabrielle Colette] (18731954)
“The greatness of man is so evident that it is even proved by his wretchedness. For what in animals is nature, we call in man wretchednessby which we recognize that, his nature being now like that of animals, he has fallen from a better nature which once was his.”
—Blaise Pascal (16231662)
“Lost at night in an immense forest, I only have a small light to guide me. A man appears who tells me: My friend, blow out your candle in order to find your way. This man is a theologian.
The sea, fluid garden filled with animals and plants.”
—Alfred Döblin (18781957)
