Le Duc Tho - Nobel Peace Prize

Nobel Peace Prize

Tho and Henry Kissinger were jointly awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in negotiating the Paris Peace Accords. However, Thọ declined to accept the award, since there was still no peace agreement. The ceasefire would however not last, with the war ending when North Vietnam overran Saigon in 1975 and annexed South Vietnam.

Famous quotes containing the words nobel, peace and/or prize:

    Parents can fail to cheer your successes as wildly as you expected, pointing out that you are sharing your Nobel Prize with a couple of other people, or that your Oscar was for supporting actress, not really for a starring role. More subtly, they can cheer your successes too wildly, forcing you into the awkward realization that your achievement of merely graduating or getting the promotion did not warrant the fireworks and brass band.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)

    But your discretions better can persuade
    Than I am able to instruct or teach,
    And therefore, as we hither came in peace,
    So let us still continue peace and love.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    He saw, he wish’d, and to the prize aspir’d.
    Resolv’d to win, he meditates the way,
    By force to ravish, or by fraud betray;
    For when success a lover’s toil attends,
    Few ask, if fraud or force attain’d his ends.
    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)
