Child was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.
She has won two major British children's book awards.

- 2002, That Pesky Rat (Orchard Books), Nestlé Smarties Book Prize, category 6–8 years
Furthermore, both What Planet Are You From Clarice Bean? (2001) and That Pesky Rat won the Smarties Prize "Kids' Club Network Special Award".
